Chemical disposal

Information about programs that we have partnered with as a drop off point for chemicals.

Help us to keep chemicals out of landfill and prevent them from contaminating our homes, the soil or waterways.

We have partnered with several programs that collect and recycle or safely dispose of paint, household chemicals and agricultural and veterinary (agvet) empty chemical containers.

Paint

You can drop off domestic quantities of unwanted paint to a local transfer station in Strathfieldsaye, Heathcote or Eaglehawk for free. 

Your unwanted paint will be recycled responsibly and given a second life.

Household chemicals

To get rid of your toxic and excess household chemicals safely you can drop them off at a Detox your home day run by Sustainability Victoria in partnership with local councils (funded by the Victorian landfill levy).

Detox Your Home day is an annual event held on Bendigo Cup Day.

Farm chemical containers

Drop your empty farm chemical containers at Eaglehawk landfill, Heathcote Transfer Station or the Goornong Transfer Station.

Please make sure you flush, pressure rinse or triple rinse all containers. We inspect and accept only approved containers. We will refuse any with visible chemical residue on the inside or out.

Containers go to the DrumMUSTER program. It collects containers to be recycled into items such as wheelie bins, fence posts and garden stakes.

Transport chemicals safely

To drop your chemicals and containers off safely:

  • Travel with chemicals in a trailer or the back of a ute, not inside the vehicle
  • Keep chemicals in their original containers
  • Make sure lids are fitted tightly 
  • Protect taps on drums so that they do not break off
  • Place containers of liquids on a tray or plastic bucket so that they do not spill or fall
  • Pack powders and solids securely
  • Keep corrosive chemicals such as battery acid away from poisons
  • Separate oxidising agents such as peroxide from all other materials
  • Double wrap old liquid containers in plastic bags to prevent leaking
