E-waste

What's e-waste

E-waste (electronic waste) is any item with an electric plug, battery or cord that is no longer working or wanted. It includes vapes, mobile phones, hair dryers, portable radios, computers, gaming consoles, lamps, electric fans, power tools and toys with batteries.

E-waste is not accepted in any kerbside bin. There are two problems with sending e-waste to landfill, including:

  • Hazardous materials, which can cause harm to the environment and human health (including fires in kerbside bins)
  • The loss of valuable materials such as precious metals which could be reused

We should all try to avoid creating e-waste in the first place.

Simple steps to dispose of used batteries safely and prevent battery fires:

Put clear sticky tape over the ends to prevent sparking and reduce the risk of fire.

Store them in an unsealed glass or plastic (not metal) container like a jam jar or ice cream tub, in a cool, dry place where kids and pets can’t access them.

Take your e-waste to your nearest drop off or collection point. Most supermarkets have battery collection bins.
